| Installation Project: Public Art Project 2006 The Global Heartbeat Installation was conceived after making several trips abroad including West Africa, Europe and Havana, Cuba. After returning from Havana a second time, I wrote a short poem that posed several questions about how people are perceived around the world, how the cultures and traditions shape their lives and how the environment impacts experiences. The message is that although people share a common globe, we often miss how much we have in common. Traveling and encountering multiple languages, traditions, physical environments, weather - makes each of us view ourselves and others through different lenses. This installation is designed to create questions about the identities, locations and cultural traditions of the people in the images. The ambiguous nature of the portraits and figurative photographs is quite intentional. The natural changes that occur in the environment (sunrise, sunset, total darkness, full sunlight) will automatically change the way the installation is seen by viewers. At night, a light glow will come from behind the circular disks. In daylight, the images will become clear and the details of the people in the photographs will be easier to see. All photographs included in this installation have been taken by the artist. |

| Life lessons: Watching Merlie Evers-Williams Fly and honoring the Dream of Martin Luther King Jr. On June 2, 2006, I had the honor of presenting a work of art to one of the icons of the civil rights movement. Myrlie Evers-Williams (widow of civil rights activist Medgar Evers) spent her life working to change the pages of history and improving the lives of countless African Americans throughout the United States. It was my honor and privilege to present “A Medal of Love for Teaching us to Fly” at the 35th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. Multi-Service Center on June 3, 2006. The MLK Jr. Center, under the leadership of Diane P. Jackson; has impacted the lives of thousands of Indianapolis residents. This Medal of Love represents the strength and determination of those who fought for justice and true freedom. The work of art serves as a thank you to all of those heroes and she-roes who made enormous sacrifices to improve the lives of countless citizens. The work also serves as a reminder that there is much more work to do in the future to build a better global home for all of us. Additional photographs located on the Photo Gallery Page |

| Peace Offering at the Indianapolis Art Center April 1- April 30, 2008 For many people throughout the world, the assassination of Rev., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., brought to the forefront all of the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement and forced dialogue about race, equality, justice and class in the United States. This tragic moment also began the long process of shaping the lives of generations to come. Some African American artists expressed their rage, some shared wishes for freedom and peace and still others moved past this difficult time by creating work that addressed issues unrelated to civil rights.
